🕹️ was added to Unicode 7.0 in 2014 and immediately became the retrogaming-community emoji. By 2017 it was the default hashtag companion for #retrogaming and #arcade content.

When to use

• Captioning retrogaming content (arcade, NES, Sega, Atari).
• Nostalgia-flagging 80s/90s gaming culture.

When not to use

• Modern gaming contexts — readers will read "old game."

Cultural notes

🕹️ has been adopted into indie game studio marketing as the universal "we make retro-feel games" flag. The visual cue works because almost no one under 25 has used a physical joystick.
