Rainbow Flag
The pride flag rendered as an emoji. Outside queer contexts it reads as a generic "rainbow"; inside them it is a stamp of identity and solidarity. On TikTok it shows up in pride captions, allyship statements, and queer-coded usernames.

About this entry
Rainbow Flag was added to Unicode in 2007 as a generic rainbow flag. The ZWJ sequence 🏳️🌈 (flag + zero-width joiner + rainbow) was standardized later and is the version that platforms render as the pride flag. Outside of pride contexts the flag still appears with rainbow stripes.
When to use
- Pride-month posts (June in the Northern Hemisphere).
- Allyship captions and solidarity statements.
- Captions where the writer wants to flag queerness or queer-friendliness.
When not to use
- Decorative rainbow readings (use 🌈 instead — the literal rainbow).
- Politics-heavy contexts where a plain flag reads more clearly.
Cultural notes
On TikTok the rainbow flag functions as a STATUS signal in the cultural-layer sense: it is one of the ways a user publicly claims a queer or ally identity. Brands started adopting it in earnest from 2021 onward; earlier adoption was rare and often read as performative.
